Resources: ‘Towards the Manifestos’

โ€˜Towards the manifestos: whatโ€™s the agenda for fixing poverty and tackling inequalities?โ€™ is a major programme of research currently taking place by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Inclusive Growth in partnership with the Policy Institute at King’s College and the Fairness Foundation created to provide a catalyst for the critical thinking required on fixing poverty and tackling inequalities in these months ahead of the next General Election.

POLLING
Polling on attitudes to wealth inequality in Britain today
a) Data: Opinium Research surveyed 2,000 UK adults between 27th February โ€“ 6th March 2023 with results weighted to be nationally and politically representative. See here.

b) Analysis: This polling showed that the richest 1% in society are now seen as holding more power than national governments with 39% of the UK public ranking the very rich as having the most power, compared with 24% who say the same about governments. This appears a reversal of the situation five years ago. Back in 2018, when asked to pick the most powerful from a list, the public were more likely to say governments (33%), rather than the very wealthy (29%), were most powerful. See details here.

c) Further analysis: The polling shows a striking level of consensus on public attitudes to inequality and on the best ways to tackle poverty and inequalities, which challenges conventional narratives about post-Brexit divisions in the UK. Read more here.

ROUNDTABLE
We held an Expert Roundtable on Monday 26th June, where inequality expert tested out the findings from our 2023 polling and built on those preliminary findings. We asked them what they thought of the polling analysis; how should it be interpreted; have we got the best ideas on the table; is there any research that has been missed? You can read the synopsis here.

CONFERENCE
We held a major conference at the House of Commons on Thursday 6 July 2023. We brought together 100+ academics, experts, think tanks and campaigners to share polling and to explore whether and where there might be an emerging consensus on solutions to these problems that could unite a broad cross-section of the public, as well as experts and political parties.
